Wessex CX Round 9: Harcourt Hill, Oxford

 Mucky Van Dessel    Mike rainturbo
More heavy rain meant that the fast Harcourt Hill course was wet in places, notably in the technical wooded section, but on the whole it held up well and saw some fantastic racing.
With the Inter-Area race happening the same day in Chesterfield many riders were unavailable for the Wessex League but that did not reduce the numbers at all, with a capacity field of 120 in the Veterans' race.
The Senior race was won by Steve James (Hargroves Cycles) from Dan Guest (Performance Cycles) and Tim O'Regan (Team Quest). For GSH, Gavin Spiers was 28th and Matt Hayden 40th.
In the combined Veterans' race the V50s set off a minute after the V40s to avoid congestion, but the faster riders soon caught the back of the V40 group. Crispin Doyle (Hargroves Cycles) took the win with Tim Hyde in 2nd, Nick Beech 30th, James PM 43rd (8th in the V50) and Richard Stephens 93rd.

GSH riders were busy with CX elsewhere over the weekend. On Saturday 8 November Mike Simpson, Tim Hyde and Adam Gardner battled through the deluge in round 5 of the Central CX League, held at the Milton Keynes Bowl. Mike was 1st, with Tim 7th and Adam 31st. At the BC Inter-Area Championships held in Chesterfield the following Sunday, Mike Simpson came 5th in the V40 race representing the Central Region.

Haute Route - Paul Hamblett Wins Triple Crown

After 21 mountain stages over 23 days, Paul has won the Haute Route Triple Crown in convincing fashion.  Paul was 4th on GC the first week (Dolomites / Swiss Alps), 8th the second week (French Alps) and an amazing 2nd in the third week (Pyrenees) - this against riders who were competing for just the week in question, not riding all 3 weeks!!
An incredible achievement, and this makes Paul one of the top amateur riders in Europe, if not the world, where climbing and endurance are key. When the road rises to meet him there are not many who can stay on his wheel.

It was obvious from a brutal Stage 1 that we were in for a tough week.  Highlights were a 2nd outright on Stage 2 for Paul Hamblett with Paul H. 3rd on GC in M3 age group, just pipping Paul Elcock in 4th.
