GS Henley will once again be running their round of the ORRL race league at the Wallingford Festival of Cycling this year. If you’ve not been before you’re missing out, it’s a great day out… watching some really frantic races around a tight, technical 1 mile closed-road circuit right through the town centre! There are also slightly less adrenaline-fuelled events on the course…vintage bikes, penny farthings and unicycles have previously featured!
As a club, we need to provide 30 marshals for the Sunday afternoon (2:30pm – 6:30pm) to cover the mens and womens ORRL races. You’ll be well looked after, with food, drink and a free t-shirt. The organisers have also free entry to the 50km sportive in the morning (with our own set-off wave too), then there will be changing rooms and showers, as well as a secure lock-up for your bike while you get a front-row view of the afternoon racing. They are also offering discounts for friends and families of marshals who would like to get involved in the 5-mile fun event. There won’t be a club run this weekend, so this is a great chance to have get a ride in, and also support the club.
All marshals will be fully briefed, and you don’t need any previous experience. The entire circuit is closed-roads, so also no dealing with traffic management.
We’re hoping to have a strong club presence there, with the club marquee and banners around as well…it’s a real opportunity to advertise the club, and also give back to the cycling community! The committee will be putting out a call for volunteers in the near future, however if you’re already keen to be involved, please contact Pete Beisty, who is organsing this years event.
